TGH (short for “Tactile Graphics Helper”) is a free iOS app from The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute that makes tactile graphics more accessible to people with visual impairments.

TGH was developed by Dr. Giovanni Fusco, Dr. Valerie Morash and Dr. James M. Coughlan from The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute with funding from:

  • the Tactile Graphics Helper iOS App Project from the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Wireless Inclusive Technologies’ (Wireless RERC) App Factory
  • the Smith-Kettlewell Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Low Vision and Blindness from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)

We also gratefully acknowledge help from visually impaired volunteers who gave valuable feedback on TGH; Brianna Baker, who annotated the tactile graphics supported by TGH; and Nirmol Kaur, who helped develop a prototype TGH annotation tool.
